Andrea Deplazes ist Professor für Architektur an der ETH Zürich und praktizierender Architekt. International bekannt ist er vor allem durch sein Buch Architektur konstruieren: Vom Rohmaterial zum Bauwerk – ein umfassendes Handbuch zum konstruktiven Entwerfen, das in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt wurde und weltweit in der Architekturausbildung Verwendung findet.
Das vorliegende Buch könnte als Vermächtnis seiner Lehrtätigkeit verstanden werden. Es entstand zwischen 2017 und 2025 im Rahmen des Kurses Entwurf und Konstruktion I/II am Departement Architektur der ETH Zürich und versammelt zentrale Fragen, Modelle und Skizzen zur Auseinandersetzung mit den Grundlagen architektonischer Raumbildung. Ergänzt wird das Material durch Bilder von Seminarwochen und Auszüge aus dem persönlichen Notizbuch von Andrea Deplazes. Es ist eine verdichtete Zusammenfassung seines didaktischen Ansatzes und erscheint anlässlich seines Ausscheidens aus dem Lehrbetrieb der ETH.

Andrea Deplazes is a professor of architecture at ETH Zurich and a practicing architect. Internationally, he is best known for his book Constructing Architecture: Materials, Processes, Structures—a comprehensive handbook on building construction that has been translated into several languages and is widely used in architectural education worldwide.
This new book could be seen as the legacy of his teaching. Developed between 2017 and 2025 in the course Design and Construction I/II at the Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich, it brings together key questions, models, and sketches to explore the fundamentals of spatial design. The material is complemented by images from seminar weeks and excerpts from Deplazes’ personal notebook. It stands as a synthesis of his pedagogical approach and marks the conclusion of his academic career as he retires from ETH Zurich.
